Travertine is a special form of limestone that is formed along streams and rivers. It’s found in large quantities in areas where there were waterfalls or hot and cold springs.
Travertine comes in a range of colours from almost white to honey to pale and gentle browns to grey and coral red. Travertine can be polished and treated to give a smooth glossy finish or left in a natural state
It provides good footing when wet. So it's ideal for floors, particularly in bathrooms and showers. The harder varieties are suitable for kitchen worktops. If you are concerned about wearing, remember that the Colosseum in Ancient Rome was constructed from Travertine and that is still standing after almost 2000 years. And, as with limestone, sealants will prevent staining.
